CDA Welcomes Landmark Proposal to Enable Routine BVLOS Operations

The Commercial Drone Alliance (CDA) today applauded the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and other federal agencies for releasing a proposed rule that would enable routine beyond visual line of sight (BVLOS) drone operations across the United States.

The Notice of Proposed Rulemaking (NPRM) seeks to remove regulatory barriers that currently limit drone operations to within the operator’s visual range. The new framework would allow approved operators to conduct BVLOS flights under defined safety and technology standards.

According to the CDA, this development represents a significant milestone in advancing the drone industry toward scalable and routine operations for applications such as infrastructure inspection, logistics, and public safety.

“The proposed BVLOS rule is a critical step toward unlocking the full potential of commercial drones,” said Lisa Ellman, Executive Director of the CDA. “It strikes a thoughtful balance between innovation, safety, and integration into the national airspace.”

The CDA emphasized that while relaxing regulations is essential for progress, maintaining safety and compliance standards must remain a priority. The organization urged regulators to continue engaging with industry stakeholders as the rulemaking process advances.
